Smalti has been used for hundreds of years to create mosaic works - the many colors and the visual effects of smalti make it very versatile. It is particularly noted for its reflective quality and texture. The color palette of solid colors, transparent colors, and gold is extensive. Smalti is both traditional and contemporary, and used by many mosaic artists today.

Smalti has been made for centuries in Italy, then in France, in Mexico since the early 1950s, and more recently in China. A Power Point for students will show how this vibrant glass is made, include some history, and show work by different mosaic artists.

Learn how to use the traditional hammer and hardie and modern wheeled cutters for cutting and shaping, then create your own special smalti mosaic
